Any business can set up a server farm somewhere and sell their services as internet based storage.

Seems all the big players are doing so, Apple, MS, Google, etc. They offer different ways to intiggrate file sharing, backups, etc. pretty much all the same, but different.

Some companies offer backups, which allows you to back up your stuff to their server farm. The info isn’t as accessible or shareable, but they tend to offer simple ways to store volumes of data.

In any case, all your information is sitting on some hard drives somewhere. Probably not in the USA - or Australia. Some folks aren’t bothered a bit by that. Others don’t care for it at all.

These services can change their policies, or simply pull the plug some day. What then, where is your data?

Internet speed in rural areas makes accessing gigabits of data over the internet questionable? As well as data limits per month by some forms of internet service.

Microsofts October update had a bug in it, and caused some folk to lose all their pictures on their computers. Then what, so sorry so sad? So much for failsafe backup.....

In general they are set up to be very easy to use, and most folk don’t consider or worry about the bad possibilities, they just want to click and go. It’s a way to buy some convinience.
