Yes take the Metro! Driving there is not fun and almost impossible to find a parking spot when you need to. The Metro goes about everywhere you need.

Smithsonian is a must! Library of Congress is good too. Contact your congressman and get a tour of the capitol and white house. We were there in 2010 for a week and did not have enough time to see everything we wanted to. Hope to go back again someday.
