I like your idea of doing it yourself rather than a large group trip. you see what you all want to see, not some tour guide.

a few years ago my son went to DC as part of a school trip. They were standing in line to see the DECLERATION OF INDEPENDENCE when they were pulled out of line by the teacher to go see our worthless congressman instead. They got to spend 2 hours at the smithsonian that trip. that was it. the rest of the time they went to some lesser musuems that the teacher that arranged the trip wanted to see instead.

Wife and I went 27 years ago. We booked some short tours, but we were able to pick ones that did exactly what we wanted. Took a tour bus around DC at night. The monuments lit up were incredible! Also took another tour bus to Mt Vernon. well worth the time on that one
