If you fly in Reagon National, there is a metro stop (train) across the street. There are machines there to buy your metro pass, for each person. Pack in a carry on, so easy to hop metro. Choose a hotel close to a metro stop. Metro is very clean and safe. Ours kids were young, and really enjoyed the metro and DC. You can go online and get tickets to Washington Monument.

Air and space museum is wonderful! They had a bus to Udvar Hazy, which is were they have the Concord, space shuttle, SR71, etc in a giant hanger at Dulles. Well worth the side trip, if you have time.

Union station is neat also. Korean memorial at night is memorable!
