That will be a good experience for a family. Definitely save a lot of time for the Smithsonian. The main museum was closed for renovation when we were there, so we saw the Air & Space. Well worth it. The Mall, with Washington & Lincoln memorials & the Vietnam Wall, should be on your list. We were there about 2 months after the Obama inauguration so the Mall was kind of a mess, grass was stomped into oblivion, but still worth it...White House, Ford's theater, all kinds of other museums. there's no end of stuff to see.
+1 on the Metro, it's easy to get around on. We were staying in Bethesda MD, which is only 6 miles from downtown DC, the Metro runs all the way out there. Tokens to ride the Metro are Susan B. Anthony dollars...really...at least they were then. I would not want to drive anywhere inside the Beltway, traffic is hellacious. We rode shuttle buses to & from the airport.
