North Central Illinois | I didn’t say higher test weight will always equal better yield than a lighter corn. Test weight is merely a function of the plant putting more or less dry matter in the kernel. More dry matter means more pounds which means more bushels to sell. A lighter corn can still yield better if it has more kernels. Most often when someone over or underestimates a yield it is because they used to high or low of number for kernels per bushel. If your ear and kernel counts are accurate that leaves ear/test weight as the weak link in yield estimates. This often leads to surprises at harvest. | |
