Subject: RE: Cotton Crop and Excess Rain Questions

Hereford, TX
The cotton crop was a couple weeks ahead of normal here this year. The freeze will actually help defoliate the cotton. As far as unopened bolls, the airplanes were running as hard as possible before the freeze spraying ethephon to open the bolls. I’m sure a few fields didn’t get sprayed in time, but most did. The bolls should open fine because the cotton was mature. The freeze shouldn’t effect quality, but the 5-7” of rain we had a week ago might. I have a lot of cotton that’s getting strung out pretty bad. I’m hoping for some dry weather so that I can get it stripped before more of it falls on the ground. We won’t see any recharge of the Ogallala aquifer from this rain. Our water table is around 300’ deep, so it would take years for any rain water to reach the aquifer. We are pumping water out of the aquifer exponentially faster than it’s recharging, so any small amount of recharge isn’t even noticed.

I thought I’d add that out of 1,800 acres of cotton I planted, less than 500 acres will be harvested due to the drought and hail.
