Too bad CPI excludes key things like food, energy, and health care/insurance. I think "real" out of the pocketbook inflation is closer to 5%, and has been over a long period. I'll dig and see what I find on that point. That makes the stock market look paltry.
EDIT: Found a link. Appears to use the CPI, as calculated in 1980, and as calculated in 1990. The 1990 version runs closer to 5%.
