Altoona, WI | Back in the day, we stored oats in an open, upstairs granary, located at one end of the dairy barn. Of course there were mice and occasionally rats up there, and that drew the attention of the local hoard of cats. Now, the cats thought those oats were just the thing since it gave them the same great feeling of relieving themselves as their city cousins did in that fancy litter that their owners bought in town. We sold oats to Quaker a few times. We would scoop as much piles of kitty waste as we could, but some would slip by. I think of that every time I eat oatmeal, but I like the stuff and have never gotten sick on it. I just hope (and I'm confident they do) they screen and clean them. | |
