Nth New South Wales Australia | We still need to maintain our single desk for export wheat no ifs or buts. What happened with the Iraq deal was of no surprize to most ,we just wish that a few people had been more up front about it earlier and saved all the dragging through of the enquiry which I might add is still going on.Looks like our Prime Minister will be also questioned in the next few days.
The whole Volker inquiry named some 2000 companies who had dealings with Iraq via UN sanctioned deals(oil for food)and the AWB was just one of a lot who appears to have had to pay some inflated prices to get wheat deals through.
I have no problem stating that we have as a family sold a lot of wheat to the AWB in the past and have always felt that they did a reasonable job in a tough world market place and their checks don't bounce.
It is probably also worth mentioning we as Australian wheat growers get no direct govt subsities ,we often look on at the US and EU systems of payments to farmers with longing BUT we know as a small nation our tax payers can't afford to do the same.
