Subject: RE: What is CAN high and low voltage?

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
In an Ag Leader system, the CAN terminator is short stub that goes into one of the branches on the CAN "Y" connectors. It may look like a dust plug to "use up an extra spot". Actually it might be a dust plug since they appear very similar. One way to tell if the suspect device is a terminator or just a dust plug is to look inside. If two of the four locations have a socket in them then the device is a terminator. If no sockets are present then the device is just a dust plug.

Another way to determine whether the device is a dust plug or terminator is to remove the soft material plugging the end. With it removed you may see nothing or you may see a resistor. If a resistor is present it is a terminator, if not it is just a dust plug.

As the other post mentions, ideally there should be exactly two terminators in a system. Ideally one at each "end" of the CAN bus. Having too many terminators can cause problems as mentioned.
