Chesley, Ontario | In Ontario, it seems to be phosphorus that gives a yield kick to wheat. A general recommendation would be 30-50 pounds of MAP (11-52-0) with the seed at planting. On drills with no fertilizer box, it has worked well to blend the fertilizer with the seed and put it all through the grain box (but make sure you clean everything out immediately after planting, or you will find out why most drills don't come with fertilizer boxes any more). If your P soil test is really low, you can up the rate (MAP is quite safe with the seed). Potash in the fall does not seem to have helped winter hardiness, but there have been cases where spreading muriate of potash in the spring has given a yield boost from the chloride. | |
