Subject: JD 4400 for small acreage

Lisbon, OH
Looked at a JD 4400 the other day. Diesel, variable speed, chopper, 444 corn head. Starts right up, no smoke, brakes good. Needs a few odds and ends but nothing major. Not running very many corn acres at the moment, but hoping to have 20-30 next year. Not much for custom operators, and most of our fields are small and difficult access, so no one would want to harvest. Guy that has it wants $2k, and pretty firm. Not looking to spend too much for what we are running. Probably wouldn't use it until next year, so have some time to work the bugs out, and figure could part it out worst case. Heard good and bad on the 4400's, but seems like quite a few of them around here. Any thoughts?
