southern MN | As others say, the planter is the key here, it all works if the planter works out for you. A 6 row might be in your future? The 4 row will get it done, but be sure it is a modern tuned up machine (from the 1970s can be modern, just have it right....), if not moving up a size wouldn’t hurt.
Tractors are fine, tillage pieces will be fine or very cheap to upgrade to what you want.
A combine one size bigger would work out on 80 acres for you well. The 4400 could do it, but at that age one ends up fixing a lot, and with a full time job and weather the harvest becomes less fun with an almost big enough old combine. Having a little bit too big of an old combine would work for you in the future, but starting out with the custom combining would be a good move.
A concern is the size of the operation, who is bankrolling it? 80acres is big enough to need a real cash outlay in spring for seed, Fert, and so forth. It’s small enough that come fall there isn’t big huge pieces of pie to pass around. Who is bankrolling this deal, and do they have the funds to carry the operation from spring planting 2019 until perhaps crops are sold mid 2020? It’s shocking to see the money disappear in spring and only then realize it may be over a year before it comes back hopefully a little larger......
So. Planter and bankroll.
The rest is easy. And fun.
