Subject: RE: Some pics of the 60" corn today

Southeast Colorado
Actually I think I'd love to go to wider rows on this dryland stuff. Not sure that I want to spend any money on two sets of equipment for the irrigated and dryland though. Maybe over time I'd learn the wider rows work just as well on the irrigated too?? We are limited on irrigation water so I'm not talking full blown irrigation anyway. Also right now my Raptor sprayer doesn't have hydraulic tracking adjustment so taking time to adjust wheel spacing if I was to run two row spacing configurations is a turn off as well.

Just out of curiosity..........have you tried 30" dryland corn side by side with your 36" spacing for a comparison? I understand the theories of wider spacing helping in our dry climate so that is why I keep trying it. However............I also understand that theories can fall flat on their face at times when put to the test. Last year our skip row corn got beat badly by our 30" rows we planted as test strips. We also had 30" of rain last year, which I know you realize is a big anomaly for here. That is why I'm pretty excited to see the results of this year's test due to the normal lack of moisture received. LOL........heck of a thing to be excited about.........right? Also, instead of just some random strips we have planted half of the acres each way. I'm certain that this will be a much better test.

I've been planting skip row now for 3 years and while I think it has merit here............one of the things that makes me question it is that I have spent time with a ground probe the following spring after harvesting the skip row stuff and I have found more moisture in the skipped area. While that is good for the next crop...........I can't help but wonder if I deprived that growing crop of needed moisture??
