We have a smooth top and trust me, if the heat and weight of a pressure cooker or a canner could crack it, my wife would have done it years ago. In fact, I think a smooth top is better than having all the weight on a flimsy electric coil. Our smooth top is 21 years old and works as great as the day we got it and you wouldn't believe the amount of canning she does.
