Western Nebraska | You should be able to update your Mac's software for free in the App Store to update to 10.14 (Mojave). That will allow you to use current iMovie software.
If you are wanting an editing software more like Final Cut Pro you can try Lightworks - it is also free to use and is quite powerful.

I have used both - I like iMovie for its ease of use and simplicity and Lightworks for more detailed editing.
