To me it sounds like the battery died and the charge port (either 30 pin or lightning) on the iPad itself is messed up. Might be dirty (clean with electrical contact cleaner or rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip) or just flat out shot. Those charge ports can be replaced.

Do you know if the battery was dead or not?
