Western Iowa | Coons will go after mature cats just fine if they want to.
One night my parents had a ruckus on their front porch in the middle of the night. They have one of those old style porch swings with the little chains hanging from the porch roof. A large tom cat had climbed up to the top of one of the little chains and howling. A large coon was standing on the swing, reaching up, trying to pull the tom cat down for a snack. The coon meet an early demise, as he didn't even leave when the front door was opened to blast him...….
A neighboring acreage had been removed that summer, with a ton of mature tree's. My folks had a big cat population before that summer. Only like 2-3 cats made it to winter. Took out a lot of coons that summer.
