Nebraska, The land of corn and cattle

A fair amount of it done here in central NE, it can be challenging in years without much winter precipitation and the stalks don't break down. Cattle are almost a requirement to help break down the residue and clean up any lost ears. When we run cows we don't have any volunteer the next year.

IMO a light strip tillage pass in the spring like with a Stripcat machine would be about perfect in my mind. Some good floating row cleaners are a must as well.

It also depends on yields, our dryland acres didn't have as many issues as our irrigated. Dryland yields were around 130-150 and irrigated was 225+. 175 seemed to be about the break, under that it was much easier to do, just less residue to deal with, over that and it can get challenging without much residue breakdown.

I would also look into some of the work done with cover crops, to help supercharge the breakdown, some legumes and some brassicas really help bring down the C:N ratio of a COC system.

Weve been exclusively COC for about 10 years, have some fields that have been COC but with some occasional tillage for about 20 years now. We picked up some land and are trying to work on a CCB rotation when possible.
