Where will it stop if anytime some company, interest group, or individual decides to lawyer up and wants to bully the moderators/owners of an open forum under the basic claim of being butt-hurt? How is a forum moderator/owner to reasonably know and follow who is engaged in legal action with whom and play referee in favor of the most threatening lawyered-up party?

That's really all this email you have received amounts to. They need to handle the issue directly with the person who made the statement they don't like. Just as important to remember is how do you know for certain the threatening email is authentic and sent on behalf of the company?

As suggested above, I would invite this company to join AgTalk, and put their name, location, etc in their profile so everyone will know exactly who they are. Then they could post and respond to the forum, and the rest of the world could see it, just like with any other post. Since they read AgTalk, maybe you could start a new thread in that same forum inviting companies to join so they can post, or maybe it could be a frozen post/notification put at the top of the forum so they don't have to do any searching to find it, and they would see it.

There are several professional and respectable ways for this company to have handled this issue, and wanting to bully and control an open forum that they don't own is not one of them.
