I agree with you Big Ben, not exactly the birth of the internet but start of widespread use...and a lot of want to be journalists spreading their “truths”.
Throw enough crap against the wall, something will stick
It was in the aftermath of our school shooting in 1996 that I learned that journalists go after the story they want to tell, and are a combination of ruthless and careless as they go out to get it.
The internet coming online accelerated what was already happening.
Fake news has certainly existed long before Trump said the phrase.
