Subject: RE: JD 4240, 4440 and IH 986, 1086

The 1086 and 4440 were the best selling models in my area. I spent a lot of time driving both, the 1086 in particular.
The IH was easier on fuel and had better power.
The JD had a better ride.
I didn't care for either of their fuel tank locations.
Both had decent hydraulics.
JD would get my vote on transmissions. Two choices and no grinding gears. It was normal to see 1086's in the shop for rear end and TA repairs.
Engines? I think I would go IH, neighbor has 15,000 hrs on their 1086. Only uses about a quart of oil between changes. Brothers 4440 had 9,000 hrs before its first overhaul!
