+1, was more concern for neighbors. Now a lot of times not even sure who is your neighbor. Also enjoyed working and watching your neighbors at work in field besides you. Harvest on a quarter was at least 2 days and that was usally on just half of that as other half was another crop, if not longer, this was is in the 70's, don't remember much about 60's. Many guys could only do about 10-20 acres of corn a day. Nobody had a lot of infrastructure on the farm until late 70's or aleast that could dry and store what their combine could handle. Pretty envious when first 4430's came out as they were a big tractor compared to a 4020 or 190xt or 856. Our country is pretty heavy dirt so most of the guys were going from a 5-16" to 5-18" plow which they pulled slightly faster but also less plugging and auto reset bottoms. AC's that actually worked and more gears to use. A lot of 1086's and 4440's sold in 78-80 before interest started going up. Many of those tractors stayed on farms along time or got sold at auction in the 80's.
Alittle off topic but Our big change was in about 1975 going from a C2 gleaner which was wore out to a used 1972 JD 7700 combine. The cornhead was so superior to anything else on the market. Big claim at the time was 10000 bu a day, don't think we ever came close to that but could do 30-40 acres most days of 135-160 bu corn as we did not have drying facilities that were very fast. Also remember all the feeder cattle that were in our country that disappeared in the late 70's. I could go on and on, good thread.
