Sometimes I put in a circuit breaker instead of the fuse until the short gets worse. They make circuit breakers that are designed to plug into a fuse holder and are auto reset. They come in various amps.

Amateur, I'm usually trying to find the breaker to jumper so I don't have to keep waiting for it to reset.
