Subject: RE: When to spray for head scab

Arva, Ontario
Good link.

The part that the chemical companies and the seed companies have failed to reveal is this:

Even the labeled rate of headspray fungicide, applied at the optimum time, will only reduce DON levels by approximately half. The independent research has also shown us that the fungicide works best on a cultivar with good inherent tolerance.

From experience - I can tell you that R40 can be sprayed at the optimum time and still have DON levels in the 5-7ppm bracket.
I spent 3 years blending my way out of the 2013 crop which was just about all R40. I had originally segregated it into 3 grades coming off the field - Feed, Bad Feed, and Horrible S/+:#t.
In Fall '16, I planted some leftover seed from fall of '15, and harvested in '17, a record wheat year here. It was our best wheat by far, but it was a low pressure scab year and came off in perfect condition. Almost enough to make me think about planting it again, but not quite...
