Long term it is cheaper to buy your own modem; but as mentioned, it gives them a reason to not ever visit your place for free to sort out issues, everything is your fault then. As well, lightening and power fluctuations do take out modems fairly regular, if it's theirs they get to replace it. It's a tough call which way to go.....
