What would be considered high hours on a skid steer. Looking for something with tracks, two speed, maybe hi flow. When do things start to fall apart?

SE Nebraska, Near Misery and Cans Ass!
Depends entirely on the use. 500 could be a lot. 3500 not much. I hear Paradise is actually looking like it this season.

I got two bobcats with 8000+hrs and still going strong run them everyday. A few years ago the neighbor said his bobcat had 10000hrs and it ran til a year ago or so

It all depends on maintenance. I can get ours to 5000 hours without much trouble at all and then little things seem to start popping up. But I've seen 5000 hour machines that look like 10,000 hour machines. Hour meters get replaced occasionally too, so you really need to look at condition over hours.

Like mentioned, maintenance is key. I have near 6k hours on an L180 (I bought it used). Replaced radiator and muffler so far, pins are a little sloppy and needs a face plate and bushings now, but runs great (yet...). Came from a dairy, but I believe it was taken care of in it's previous life.

Not to hijack the thread, but we bought a L170 last year used with 750 hours on it, (same frame as L180?) and have really liked it so far- have over 1000 hours on it now. I hear some folks say that the NH engines they used were prone to a short life on occasion, have you had to do any engine work to yours?

Any other work in general?

Is yours fully manual or does it have pilot controls?

Would like to keep this one around as long as possible.

I think some engines may have been prone to issues but I'm not exactly sure which ones/series....

I've done no internal engine work on mine, and none that I know of I guess either. Really the only stuff I've done is what I mentioned, plus LED lights and some flasher bulbs...and tires. Full manual...it's an older one so not sure if pilots were available early in that series or not...simple though.

Hours are not so relavent on a used skid steer. Usage and maintenance vary so widely that is best to consider the condition first and hours second. I’ve got a 13,500 hour mid eighties Case setting in the shed, still works just fine yet, repairs never have really spiked at any point in its life so far. We owned it from new.

100 hours of loading fertilizer or salt would be too many for me to consider buying. 5,000 hours of loading hay indoors with religious maintenance...….Chip shot. Rental machines are abused, but there are deals to be had if you don't mind a remodel project.

Tracks are a little different as the tracks do not slip on dirt as much as tires so the hydros take a lot more abuse as in they get stalled out. Wheel machine will spin tires before stalling out.
A higher percentage of track machines are purchased to dig with than wheeled machines. Lots of wheeled machines are running pallet forks and other light duty stuff. Non livestock farms can be a very easy life for a skidder.

Who owned it and what they did with it is everything. One of mine belonged to a airport-nice cushy job and excellent maintenance records but it had a lot of hours (5600).

Value falls off over 3000 to 3500 hours. Machines under 2k hours sell best.

Most track loaders are due for a rebuild at 3000 hours here.

We use skid steers 85% scrapping freestalls, easy work for them, but subjected to splashing manure and all kinds of weather, mostly temperature. Some digging, snow plowing. Older one has a silage facer on it mostly now. We have had and still have NH L160's. The first got up to over 10000 hrs with a few problems but only one with hydraulic motors was expensive. The other 2 are now well into the 1000's and going strong. When the boom on the 10000 hr unit broke around a weld we decided to trade it. Got one of the new numbered models (218?). big mistake. It blew an engine so got a replacement machine and that is troublesome too. I would say 2000 hrs is too much on those machines, stay away. If you can find well kept LS I wouldn't be afraid of 4000. It should go for another 4000.
