I had some the past 2 years that looked that bad or worse. In both cases I had another undamaged field adjoining the damaged fields and weighed everything across the scales. I was weighing whole fields, not just the areas with the most damage. In both years I had no yield loss.
Take your neighbor at his word. Weigh everything and see what you come up with.
