south central WI | The weeds here would have sucked the moisture out of the soil and shaded the alfalfa which hurts it. We plant roundup ready alfalfa. We spray when alfalfa is a few inches tall after seeding. Anything not sprayed is visibly stunted and yields less, even on the next cutting.
Ad far as cutting or waiting, I would have to see it to determine. How tall is it? If it's flowering it's not going to gain much growth. I think it's vegetative state is done and it will start focusing on developing a seed. We have always cut 2 or 3 times in the seeding year, even during 2012 and 2013 droughts. | |
