Looking for a small used Deere riding mower...have found several in my price range but don't have a clue what is an acceptable # of hours on one. Any input appreciated.

I have a 97 Simplicity and it has a 20hp Vanguard that has
well over 2000 hrs. I think Kaw and Briggs big blocks are
among the top gas engines.
Each brand has their cheaper engines.

Depends on care. I've got a JD L100 I was given thats got somewhere in the range of 2500 hours on it as it mowed every day all summer for 4 seasons. Regularly needs parts or a repair now while it was pretty reliable up to about 2000 hours. It was well maintained but it won't see 3000 hours I don't think.

If you are talking about commercial grade zero turns, then yeah I’d agree 1500+ is high hours. But is typical for companies that don’t sell mowers every year.

I always run synthetic motor oil in mine after the motor is broke in and keep filters changed and other maintenance performed.

Depends a lot on what mower it is. We have a Deere LA series which is a cheapy and it will be pretty well junk by 1000 hours.

I think it makes a difference if it's air cooled or liquid cooled.

ive never had motor problems on a lawn mower. Its been more deck problems that drive me insane. The cheaper mowers have a way lighter deck that bends easier. So if you are using it in rough terrain..check the deck thickness. If you bend a deck..then you will have belt problems..and then you need a new belt..So..id be less worried about the motor and more worried about the mowing parts.

I have a Deere 345 mower with 2,401 hours as of today. Mowing every week. Just got off of it today.

It has a Kawasaki water cooled 20 hp engine. Still all original. Should last lot longer with proper care.

Got couple more Deere mowers also but not that many hours.

I have a 5 year old Dixie Chopper Silver Eagle with a little over 600 hours. The Generac 27 HP air cooled engine has been using oil for the last 100 hours. The local Dixie Chopper dealer claims they no longer offer this engine and it cannot be rebuilt. Dixie chopper offers a Briggs & Stratton engine as a replacement for about $2400.

Got retired this year. Ready for another engine rebuild. All the deck suspension points need welded up and rebored. A school had it before me. Had it for the last 23 years. Still starts good. Keeping it as a backup. Someday I may restore it.

How do you put 10,000 hours on an auger engine?

I'm not real sure how you would put 10000 hours on auger engines.

When I had my mowing business I had two F725 John Deere mowers that had over 2500 hours when I sold the business.

Typically a 1000-1500 hrs is getting to be considered higher hrs. Myself when they get close to 800-1000 hrs they are getting where you are going to spend money. 2500 hrs is not a normal without some major repairs. Somebody might tell you about their exception but not the rule. Definitely a difference between maintainance and water cooled and air cooled.

I had a Kawasaki go out at 750 hours-those older Deere zero turns had heat problems-would warp the head and bend push rods...so proceed with caution in my opinion.

We put in a honda replacement for $2,200. Made a new mower out of it. I think it was JackSmallEngine or something like that-came with a kit-adaptor plate, wiring harness adaptor, etc. Was pretty simple swap, couple hours for average mechanic.

My 1974 112 JD, bought new by my Mom, has mowed 1/4 to 1/2 acre of lawn every year of its life, plus weeds around the place & a small orchard, plus a lot of tiller time, no hour meter, but a LOT of hours...the head nor pan has ever been off of the engine, good old cast iron Kohler. The original tires are still on it. I did cosmetically restore it about 3 years ago.

To convert mower years into full size tractor years, add a zero to the mower hours.

That is only a little over 700 hours a year for 14 years. We hauled commercial and furnished the auger most of the time. Trans loaded a lot of fertilizer also . Briggs motor was shot the first year.
The Kohlers never did use oil. One threw a rod. It had 15 -40 oil in it and the actual temp was -16 F. The driver started it up put the throttle wide open and put the corn to it. The oil was so thick it didn't even run out the hole!
One is sitting down in the shop. It still runs but has low power. I think due to an automatic fuel shut off issue. I needed the auger that day ( Sunday) and I could buy a new Harbor fright engine cheaper than I figured I could fix that one.
