Subject: RE: Valuable and efficient shop lights?

east grand forks, mn
We built our shop in 2004, we put in T-5 HO. After about 5 years we noticed shop was getting darker and bulbs and ballasts were burning out. In 13 years we replaced probably 50% bulbs and 30% ballasts, plus cleaned the reflector lens 3 times in that span to try and increase lumens. Last year started putting up LED in place of the fluorescents that were burnt out. WOW! Much better light even compared right next to a new ballast and bulbed T-5 HO. We are now 1/2 and 1/2 and will replace the others when they burn out.
LED are cheaper to run by a long shot and lifespan is 3x-5x's of fluorescent. Another huge plus for us is LED's lumens won't degrade over the life of the fixture. Fluorescents degrade down to 80% lumens in the first few years. The LED fixture is sealed and never need to clean the reflector lens that builds with dust, dirt, smoke.

In 2004 we were trying to decide between fluorescents and metal halide. The T-5HO was the best you could buy at the time. LED is the best and the the only negative is the upfront cost, but is well worth the money in the long run.
