I guess that depends on what you call starting to calve. Some will walk around trying to find that "perfect" spot. Might stand off by themselves, lay down and get up, but still no cervical plug or anything. I don't count that as labor starting, even though it probably technically is. I consider it labor when they are actually laying/standing, tail up some, fluids start showing. Ours need to be done within an hour or they get put in and get a sleeve to see what's going on. If everything feels small and coming the right way, I may just let them have it themselves, but they stay in the corral just incase they need help. If the legs are big, well they come out no matter what. Usually the older cows take 20min tops from laying down to standing and nursing. When you know your cows and how they normally calve. You will know if one of the girls is having trouble.
