Middlesex County, Ontario | A tablet doesn't overheat when you use it for arm chair operation because there are no air vents to block. Tablets are also generally pretty spill proof as long as you wipe them off right away.
A note about windows 10. I love windows 10, but there was a bit of a learning curve. If you get her an iPad then she will never have to learn a new OS for the rest of her life. She'd be able to jump onto an iPhone or iTouch or iPod without even thinking about it.
The negative of an iPad would be typing out emails. For anything more than a sentence you really don't want to type on a touch screen. You can buy external keyboards. Anything from a flip over lid keyboard (making it kind of like a laptop) or a bluetooth keyboard.
