A lot of useful info left out of your post, like current location and why it "needs to be stackable".

1. If the current pair is in the basement of a two-story house, consider a smaller pair upstairs near 'the source' and keeping the big pair for bedding and other big stuff, like work clothes. Much of the 'work' of laundry is lugging things back and forth.

2. Quite a number of NATers have said how much they like having the old units out in the shop for the work clothes. Could that be an option?

3. "Not being a separate machine" has me puzzled. I hope you aren't considering one of those All-in-one units?

4. You're at about maximum usage now and for the next several years, but project ahead another fifteen years and you should be at or near Empty Nest.

5. If you can find the space and utilities, a double set adds capacity and flexibility- always something up and running.

Bottom line: Don't look for one single solution. Several small tweeks can be a bridge.
