What comes by the dozen? Beer, soda, many other beverages, donuts, other baked goods. Number.12 can be divided 2, 3, 4, or 6 ways, whereas 10 can only by 2 or 5. (remember "factoring" in grade school math?). Many products by the case quantity are packed 12 in box ( oil quarts, a lot of groceries ). A box of 12 makes it "squarer" and easier to load on pallets with less packaging waste. (though obviously doesn't apply to the oblong egg carton)

My father used to be the lineman for the township phone company:. All wooden crank phones and batteries until buyout by Bell in 1971. Still had lots of old phone and poleline hardware in the garage. Had a full case of new glass insulators in a box marked " Qty:. 6 & 2/3 doz. ". Quick: how much is that?
