Bourbon,Indiana

1) Boron can leach. Not like Nitrate-N, but it will go away.

2) Soil tests are not finitely reliable....meaning not as accurate. (see pic)

I don't worry about soil test numbers as much, although I watch them. Tissue sampling during the season is a better way to tell if the plant needs boron.

After adding dry Boron to my dry spreads, my tissue samples now tell me the plants are getting what they need. So I try to add a little Boron every year.

However.....does it pay? I can't answer that. I saw a universal B deficiency in ALL of my tissue samples many years ago, and decided I wanted to rectify that. And that has been accomplished. But I have not put any test plots in to see if the $$ spent has paid me back.

My quick take.

Edit to add: I use either a 5# or 10# rate of Borate/acre......which comes to around 0.75-1.5# actual Boron. Make sure you don't add too much at a time as Boron is toxic in large doses.
