Subject: Corn husks tight or loose, up or down, ear rot

I am looking for best strategy to reduce ear rot diseases, ie Trichoderma which is usually associated with a developing ear. We have alot of bird damage as well. Should I be looking for a variety with a loose or tight husk?
Is it a no-brainer to find a variety where the ear points down?

Any other suggestions/tips? Thanks any Dekalb or NK varieties have the best-suited traits?
