northeast ohio | The system you are considering is rock solid, but no longer supported. If you are wanting to put an alternative, more current system together for 2018 there seems to be a premium on used prices right now. IMO the best deal for RTK level accuracy within the Trimble line up is to buy a new 750 or 2050 and buy a basic JD2600 display to trade in for the High Accuracy unlocks.
This said, we've assembled several FMX / FM1000 systems the past three years for our operation which about your size with the same age or older tractors. Two with EZ Pilots and one is an EZSteer. Each has a full Field IQ cab kit. We went this route to add seed monitoring and use RangePoint RTX. Both of which are not possible with a 250 or 500. Total cost for display, steering, and cab kits were about $3350 (FMX WAAS / VRA Unlock / EZSteer / cab kit) to just under $7000 (FM1000 dual receiver Omni, EZPilot, cab kit, ISOBUS harness, SMM and RSCM).
Best strategy for putting a used system together includes a trimble cabling guide, AgTalk classifieds and patience.
