Subject: How Much Value Do You Put On A Dryer Setup?

NEMO
Looking into adding a corn dryer setup and wondering how much value do you place on a complete setup? Anticipate running 150,000 - 200,000 bushels of corn through it. Maybe even dry 20-30,000 bushel of wheat some years.

Besides the obvious benefit of starting harvest a couple weeks earlier, how much value do you put on reducing 'Phantom' grain loss and other harvest losses? Any other advantages?

How many cents a bushel per year is your dryer setup worth to you? $0.05, $0.10, $0.20, $0.30?

Example: If it costs you $100,000 for a dryer, air system and versa loop and it lasts 10 years, that's $10,000 a year or $0.05/bushel on 200,000 bushel (not counting interest). That's the easy figures, but what is the value for the 'other' benefits? Moisture dock of $0.06/point on 5 points would be $.30/bushel at the elevator minus $0.10 bushel in electricity and gas ($0.02/point to dry) minus the $0.05 bushel cost of purchase nets a value of $0.15/bushel. Is it worth another $0.15 bushel to avoid field/harvest losses for a total 'Value' of $0.30 bushel a year?

Has anybody went from 'not drying a bushel of corn' one year to 'drying the entire corn crop' the next year? How did you like it? If you could do it over again, would you still put in the dryer?
