The downfall of the 500 head is that it will not fit on the lateral tilt feederhouse plate from 98 and later. Not all 98 machines were equipped with lateral tilt, however. You can remove the lateral tilt feederhouse plate and still run a 500 on a 98 and newer R series feederhouse that has lateral tilt. I am running a 500 series on a 98 R62 that has lateral tilt. All we did is remove the front plate from the feederhouse and plug a couple hydraulic fittings and you are in business. Pretty simple to do. Our hugger corn head is an early serial number and it will not fit the lateral tilt feederhouse either so we were going to have to trade both heads if we wanted to use the lateral tilt. All of the other components of the lateral tilt stay on the combine and if we wanted to use a 800 series or newer flexhead or a 98 or newer hugger, we could have it converted back in under an hour easily. The 98 and newer R series use a different header height control system than the old 3 spring set up. It is pretty easy to convert a 500 series to the newer combines. All that is needed is a couple of proximity sensors for each end of the header and a different wiring harness. We did this to our 500 and it works just fine. We also have a crary air reel on our 500. If we ever decide to go to an 800 or 8000 series the reel will transfer right to them using all the same brackets and drives.
