It makes a huge difference what species the tie was made from. Oak takes the creosote well and being a strong wood to begin with can make a good post if it hasn't started to get soft. By the time a maple gets replaced it may not be worth the effort to set it. You will find better ties in Ohio and Pennsylvania but the freight will be higher.
