Hi Von,
As an onion grower, we grow them from transplants as well but they are in trays, plug plants, have a bit of dirt on them.
We aim for starting the 25th of April normally.
With your bare root plants, I would suggest to keep them in your fridge until the ground is fit and the biggest risk of frost is gone.
I would not put them in a plastic back, rather roll them in a sheet of moist newspaper and hope for the best.
Once planted, they can handle some frost, it will turn the old leaves white and die of but they will die of anyways.
As long as there is a green leaf inside the sheath, they will grow.
for big onions, plant them 5-6" apart in rows 12 tot 15" apart.
You could plant them now, considdering the ground is fir, but you have to protect them somewhat from the frost.
After planting, give it a good shot of Prowl to keep most weeds down. 50 gpa water
Later on you can use Buctril/Bromoxinil. 40 gpa water

Good luck and keep us posted.
