Dead Zone is a value that the Nav controller needs to tell how much current it takes to move the steering valve before any fluid will flow through it. Steering gain refers to how fast the valve reacts to the vehicle that it is trying to steer. That is a very basic idea of how it all works but to make sense of it think of it this way. Too low of a gain or d-zone value and steering will be slugish, too high and it will be very gerky and unstable. Hope that this helps.
