Subject: John Deere fuel filters flow rate???

Chebanse, IL.....

In the thread below I mentioned converting the 3020D old original style double filter (side by side) to the later model Stanadyne type clip on.

https://talk.newagtalk.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=761055&posts=11#M6551182

However, I heard from someone that suggested the old double filter might have actually flowed more gpm of fuel vs the later single clip-on filter and that performance might suffer with the newer filter.

So, I was wondering if anyone had factual info one way or another? Also, in the factory dual filter arrangement, how does the fuel flow? Does it go from one filter directly to another? Or, is there some type of divider in the housing that actually diverts the fuel flow to both cartridges simultaneously?

Or, the better question might be, why the dual cartridges? I believe the later larger JD engines actually used dual clip-on style.

Thanks

Deere uses that single clip on filter on tractors to 200 hp.

Between Omaha and Des Moines, 7 miles South of I80

Tractordata only shows using 5.1 gph (Gallons Per Hour) of diesel fuel. (for the diesel 3020 model)

That's not much needed flow rate, to go thru that fuel filter.

I've converted two of these 3020s on our farm to the single filter setup when engine was rebuilt. I setup the fuel pump on both to 78hp and have had no issues. The original dual filter setup will have more media area and less restriction at a given flow rate but is overkill for the 3020. My combine which is 215hp has the single filter setup and gets along fine with normal service intervals.

I'm not familiar with the tractor you're working on but you can go on to Wix filters website look your filters up and it will tell you the gallons per hour.

Ron, the fuel flows from one filter then to the next. You can tell when you prime them. It was hard to get our 3020 to use more than 3 gals/ hr. so I don't think you will have any trouble.

That's actual fuel sprayed out the injectors
They return more fuel than that to the tank
How much they actually pump I have no idea.
But i would think one glass filter would be sufficient.

SE Nebraska, Near Misery and Cans Ass!
Glad songs were used on much bigger units thanthe 3020 so the flow rate will be no problem side benefit is there a lot finer Micron rating so they will filter better , minus is they will plug quicker

We used to tractor pull with our 4320 that had the single glass filter on and had no issues at 300+ hp @3000 rpm's and 450cc of fuel. I actually tried the double glass filter setup and I couldn't fill the 2nd filter fast enough with out a pusher pump. You won't have any problems with the single glass filter on a 3020 farm tractor.

I did the conversion from the stacked round filters to the one rectangular glass filter on both of my 3020 tractors and one filter is more than adequate. WIX says it will flow 33 gallons per hour.
