Southeast PA | You would have very little damage with a drag line i believe, since it's basically just a tractor running. I would bet wheat would even be ok. We run tanks on rye every year, as was said, some years there is a little more damage than others. The earlier in the year it gets done, the better for regrowth. Also make sure it's frozen enough to support the weight, that helps with damage and regrowth also. With a drag line it shouldn't matter, but if you're making multiple trips, stay in the same wheel tracks, that way if it is killing the rye it's only in one spot.
You can do it when is not frozen also, but it need to be dry enough that your not getting ruts or compaction. The root mass will hold alot of weight, and drag line should be very light.
You will be able to see any skips in the spring, they will be a lighter green.
