Subject: Corn storage question?

Cherokee County, Northwest Iowa
Lots of things we do are because of tradition or "That's the way I was taught". My father used to always run the bin fans for a couple of hours every Jan. on a nice day. So I have continued to do it ever since. Corn will probably be stored till July delivery.

So that was this morning's project. 30 foot diameter bins, around 10,000 bushels of corn dried to 14.5-15% moisture, dried in dryer bin and moved so no dryer-induced wall spoilage concerns, centers were cored out after harvest, bin leveled, and cooled to 34-40degrees. Ran fans that GSI rates as 5-7.5 hp, like a 24 inch fan, for 2.5 hours when outside temps were 32 degrees. We did have a couple of really nice days last week that got up to 50 degrees and melted 98% of the snow around here. Don't think that I had any snow blow in under the eaves this year like we have sometimes in the past had.

Question: Was all this a waste of time, effort and electricity, or is this whole process the proper way to handle stored corn?
