Finger Lakes NY | The fact that you have looked at the numbers and see it is tough at best shows you are being smart about it. I am not optimistic about dairying on a small scale. Not trying to be negative but realistic. I have neighbors who milk less than 100 cows and the farms have been in their families for several generations and they are really hurting right now. The price cycles seem to drop deeper and last longer than I ever remember. Talk to your banker or potential lender and have them help with cash flow projections. With that said, if you are determined that milking cows is what you want to do, and you are good at it, you can make it work. May require you to work off farm (school bus driver, etc...) The margins are super tight in dairy, beef, crops anymore and volume is where it seems to be at. Wish you well. | |
