Subject: Any physicists on here or just us grease monkeys?

East Central Mo.
I bought an air pump for my farm pond, with the intention of melting ice in the winter and aerating it in the summer when needed. It develops volume, but very little pressure. I read where it takes 1 lb. of pressure for each 28" of water depth. I'd like to add a check valve, so water doesn't back-feed when it's off. My question is..... since it only puts out 4lbs. of pressure, does the check valve opening pressure need to be subtracted from the depth? If the check valve takes 1lb. to open, am I down to 3lbs. left available, or do I still have 4 left since the first lb. is keeping it open? If location makes a difference, I'm considering installing it at the pump, since the line will run downhill, thinking that will keep the air trapped. How much pressure do I have, 3 or 4lbs.?
