Subject: Deutz oil cooled engine oil change question???

West Central Iowa
We have the head off of the oil cooled Deutz that I posted about a while back. The head gasket was blown.

Here is the link to that post.

OK, here is my question.

When changing engine oil should the engine oil cooler be drained too? It appears to have a plug on one side towards the bottom that should drain most of the oil from the cooler. Both lines go in the top off the cooler, so it is not going to drain unless we remove the drain plug. If we drain it, will it refill from the engine crankcase after the engine is started or is there some other procedure that we must follow? Our concern is that it may "steal" too much oil from the lube of the engine while it is filling the cooling system. If it makes a difference, this engine has the oil cooler mounted in front of the engine like a radiator and not the style that is built directly on the engine.

Thanks!
